At the beginning of a new year, there is much to celebrate for the global education community. The rapid educational expansion in the past decades has tripled the average years of schooling of an adult in developing countries in just two generations. But we need to focus our sight not only on school attendance and average years of schooling but also on learning because this will be an important driver for its sustained growth. What can the Philippines do to prepare its education system for the post-2015 development agenda?

The presenter is Dr. Elizabeth King, Director of Education and Acting Vice President in the Human Development Network of the World Bank. She is also World Bank's senior spokesperson for global policy and strategic education issues in developing countries. Until January 2009, she was a manager in the Bank's research department, heading the team that focuses on human development issues. Her published research covers various topics such as household investments in human capital; the linkages between education, poverty and economic development; gender issues in development, especially women's education; education finance; and the impact of decentralization reforms.
