#PIDSInfoBits: As the Philippine economy grows, are Filipino children getting the nutrition they need to thrive?

This #NutritionMonth, let’s take a closer look at one of the country’s persistent development challenges: chronic malnutrition.

Despite economic growth, stunting continues to affect many Filipino children. While the Philippines has made progress, improvements have been slow and remain below national nutrition goals.

A PIDS study finds that economic growth alone does not automatically translate into better nutrition outcomes. While public revenues have increased over time, investments in proven, nutrition-specific interventions, particularly those supporting mothers and children during the first 1,000 days of life, remain limited.

As the Philippines moves toward upper-middle-income status, investing in children’s nutrition is also an investment in the country’s future. Reducing stunting can help build human capital, address intergenerational poverty, and give every Filipino child a better start in life.

Know more about the challenges and opportunities in addressing chronic malnutrition among Filipino children by reading the chapter “The Future of Children in the Philippines” in the book “Raising the Bar: Understanding and Solving Chronic Malnutrition in the Philippines”
