Hello, PIDS friends! Here's our #FactFriday for the week on the challenges confronting platform workers or those who provide service using online platforms.

A PIDS study found several serious challenges confronting platform workers. These include the lack of security entitlements, weak voice due to lack of collective representation, low pay arising from workers’ inability to negotiate the contract price, lack of job security, isolation due to lack of interaction with other workers, time management due to housework responsibilities, and unreliable internet connection. Among its recommendations include a universal social protection that may be financed through taxes and contributions and enhancing the portability of contributions to ensure the continuity of entitlements when workers shift from one work arrangement to another. It also underscores the importance of education and training both in hard and soft skills to help workers not just secure a job but also command and negotiate high compensations. The provision of fast and reliable internet connection is also crucial.
