Delegates of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) paid a courtesy visit to the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) on November 29, 2022. They were welcomed by President Aniceto Orbeta Jr. and Senior Research Fellows Sonny Domingo and Adoracion Navarro.
OECD is an international organization that promotes public policies for long-term economic growth. Its delegation consisted of Head of Asia Desk Kensuke Molnar-Tanaka and Deputy Head Prasiwi Ibrahim.
"The OECD’s visit presents us an opportunity to learn from its expertise and share our experiences in mitigating disaster risks in the Philippines," Orbeta said.
Molnar-Tanaka shared that the OECD is keen on supporting disaster resiliency in Asia. The organization plans to tap disaster resiliency experts such as PIDS for its upcoming disaster risk reduction publication and international experts meeting in 2023.
Navarro and Domingo shared their knowledge of how the national government and local government units manage disasters—from using their calamity funds to addressing challenges in institutional efficiency and conducting post-disaster relief and other activities.
According to Molnar-Tanaka, their insights opened new leads for OECD’s possible strategies in Asia.
"We are looking forward to engaging more with PIDS in the future," said Molnar-Tanaka. "We believe working together can help drive innovation in economics and finance and improve disaster risk mitigation in Asia and the Pacific.”
