The PIDS and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) held a public symposium on "Economic Integration and Nation Building” on September 21, 2017 at the Marco Polo Ortigas, Manila.

This event was part of the joint publication-cum-outreach initiative of the Philippine Government and ERIA to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year. It aimed to enhance the understanding of ASEAN people about the ASEAN Economic Community and East Asia’s economic integration, as well as to generate insights and recommendations on moving AEC and East Asia’s integration into 2025 and beyond.

Ultimately, the objective of the symposium was to let ASEAN people have a better understanding and appreciation of, greater emotional attachment to, and deeper engagement with ASEAN and the region. As part of the event, there were also a series of panel discussions on (1) ASEAN economic integration and nation building; (2) liberalization and good governance toward AEC 2025; (3) facilitation and connectivity as means toward AEC 2025; (4) opportunities and challenges from China and India; and (5) the role of regional comprehensive economic partnership integration. Invited panelists were some of the most prominent academics, researchers, and government officials as well as key ASEAN Secretariat officials.
