To familiarize everyone with key socioeconomic terms and concepts, we are launching this new social media series.

For this week, our buzzword is “agricultural worker”.

It refers to a person engaged in the cultivation, production, harvesting, and marketing of crops, livestock, poultry, and/or fish.

A PIDS study found that organizing small farmers and fisherfolk (SFF) into cooperatives remains a slow development in the Philippines. Cooperatives enable SFF to collectively strategize to participate in the value chain and have a voice in policymaking. However, the total membership of active SFF cooperatives is only around 13 percent of the total number of farmers reported by the Philippine Statistics Authority in 2018.

Know more about efforts to empower SFF by reading “How Much Has People Empowerment Progressed among Small Farmers and Fisherfolk? State of People’s Organizations in the Philippines” available at https://www.pids.gov.ph/publication/discussion-papers/how-much-has-people-empowerment-progressed-among-small-farmers-and-fisherfolk-state-of-people-s-organizations-in-the-philippines.
