In this episode of Money Talks, former Trade Undersecretary and PIDS Emeritus Research Fellow Dr. Rafaelita “Fita” Aldaba unpacks the Philippines’ evolving position amid ASEAN’s shifting tariff regimes. Drawing from her updated discussion paper with PIDS, she explains how the country initially held a competitive edge with lower tariff exposure but is now facing intensified competition as regional neighbors adjust their commitments.

"We somewhat lost that advantage that we had previously and right now of course we have to compete really against strong countries who have deeper involvements or deeper participation."

Dr. Aldaba also weighs in on the feasibility of the Philippines’ push for a 15% tariff rate, and what’s needed to stay in the game.
