To formally launch the Development Policy Research Month (DPRM) celebration, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will hold a Press Conference on September 1, 2015, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Spearheaded by the PIDS, the DPRM is an annual nationwide celebration held every September to promote awareness and understanding of the importance of policy research in the formulation of development policies, programs, and projects.

The DPRM theme this year is “Tamang Regulasyon para sa Patungo na Pag-ahon” (Effective Regulation for Sustainable Growth) to highlight regulatory issues in the different sectors of the economy. There is an urgent need for the country to build a strong regulatory management system that uses research evidence in the systematic assessment of policies and regulations, from the proposal to the implementation and to the necessary reform stages.

The press conference panel will include Dr. Gilberto Llanto, who will present his paper “Reduce regulatory burden, Improve regulatory quality” in support of this year’s theme. Joining Dr. Llanto to discuss issues within their respective sectors are Atty. Winston Ginez, Chairman of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board; Atty. Nicasio Conti, Deputy Administrator for Planning of the Maritime Industry Authority; and Mr. Gamaliel Cordoba, Administrator of the National Telecommunications Commission.

Through the month-long celebration of the DPRM, we hope to influence our policymakers to take action in adopting explicit standards to ensure regulatory integrity and quality, reduce regulatory burdens, and develop an environment conducive to inclusive economic growth.
