This virtual event, organized in partnership with United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, will feature two PIDS studies, namely, “How Ready Are We?  Measuring the Philippines’ Readiness for Digital Trade Integration with the Asia-Pacific” and “Regional Health Integration and Cooperation in the Philippines”.

In the first study, Senior Research Fellow Francis Mark Quimba assessed the Philippines' readiness for regional digital trade integration with the Asia-Pacific by using the Regional Digital Trade Integration Index (RDTII) framework to provide an analytical overview of the Philippines' digital trade policy and regulatory environment. He found that the Philippines generally has an open policy environment for digital trade, which suggests that it is ready for digital trade integration with the region. However, the proper implementation of some of these policies has not been fully achieved, and this could be a significant obstacle or challenge to regional integration.

In the second study, Research Fellow Valerie Gilbert Ulep assessed the regional health integration and cooperation in the Philippines and identified challenges and opportunities. He found the Philippines lagging in critical health outcomes and access indicators in the region.  Health integration and cooperation could be instrumental in achieving health system goals—a prospect that could be hindered by regulatory, infrastructure, and implementation challenges.

This event will also feature the “Philippine National Action Plan for Digital Trade and Digital Health Integration with the Asia-Pacific” to be presented by Dr. Martina F. Ferracane, research associate at the European Centre for International Political Economy.
