The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will hold a press conference on September 4, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 NN, at the Novotel in Quezon City to herald the start of the Development Policy Research Month (DPRM) celebration this year.

The DPRM is an annual event led by PIDS every September to promote awareness and understanding of the importance of policy research in formulating evidence-based policies, programs, and projects. Each year, a theme is chosen, and activities are held to encourage informed dialogue and discussion of key issues related to the theme.

This year’s DPRM theme is “Navigating the New Globalization: Local Actions for Global Challenges” or in Filipino, “Paglalayag sa Bagong Globalisasyon: Lokal na Pagkilos sa mga Pandaigdigang Hamon”. The Institute chose this topic to create awareness and increase understanding of the new era of globalization particularly on the challenges that come along with it, such as rising protectionism, worsening inequality trends, trade wars, weakening social cohesion, and proliferation of fake news and disinformation. These challenges, if not managed well through proper interventions, can undermine the ability of the Philippines to sustain its rapid economic growth and attain its long-term development vision of a Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Buhay Para sa Lahat (AmBisyon Natin 2040) as well as its targets under the Sustainable Development Goals. Through this month-long celebration, PIDS hopes to encourage everyone to be proactive both in dealing with these challenges and in harnessing the opportunities of the New Globalization through local actions that are guided by a shared vision of prosperity and inclusivity, unity, wider and deeper participation of all sectors of society, and adaptive, evidence-based policymaking.

The press conference panel will be led by PIDS President Celia M. Reyes. Joining her are PIDS Senior Research Fellow Roehlano Briones, Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones, Department of Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Marivel Sacendoncillo, and Department of Trade and Industry-Multilateral Relations Division Chief Marie Sherylyn Aquia.
