A PIDS study showed that free trade agreements (FTAs) have enabled the Philippines to import most products from its partner countries at zero tariffs. Neighboring Southeast Asian partners have close to 100 percent of their exports to the Philippines at zero tariffs. Japan, through the Philippines-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, and Australia and New Zealand also have more than 95 percent of their products subjected to zero tariffs. The study found that these FTA imports positively and significantly affect industry growth and labor productivity, providing evidence that the country benefits from trade agreements through improvements in industry output.
