The Northern Negros Natural Park (NNNP), also recognized as the “Lung of Negros”, is one of the protected areas legislated under Republic Act 11038, or the ENIPAS Act. Covering more than 70,000 hectares, the park spans 11 municipalities and cities in Negros Occidental and is home to several endangered species listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

Recognizing NNNP’s promising models in local wildlife protection, integrated conservation, and ecological management, the PIDS team—led by Dr. Sonny Domingo—visited sites in the park from June 16 to 30 and consulted various local government and non-government stakeholders. This was part of their assessment of the implementation of the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) and the Expanded NIPAS (ENIPAS).

Initial findings point to the need for more resources and to build up inter-agency coordination and community engagement for better protection and management of protected areas.
