Delegates of Korea’s National Economic Advisory Council (NEAC) paid a courtesy visit to the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) on November 7, 2022. They were received by PIDS President Aniceto Orbeta Jr. and research fellows Adoracion Navarro, Margarita Debuque-Gonzales, and Ma. Christina Epetia.

NEAC is a policy advisory body that reports directly to the president of the Republic of Korea on economic affairs.

The delegation was led by NEAC Vice Chairperson Lee In Ho. “The role of institutions like NEAC and PIDS in policy advisory is important. We should get together regularly and communicate with each other,” he said.

Orbeta welcomed and briefed the delegates on PIDS’ contribution to the country. “We provide policy research as sound evidence for crafting policies, plans, and programs that will benefit the Philippines,” he said.

NEAC is building a global network of economic policy advisory organizations to foster cooperation, learning, and working together on economic policies and issues.

NEAC Council Member Cheong Inkyo added, “We are just arranging the plan, but we believe the Philippines should be there.”

During the visit, the group exchanged insights about the Philippine economy, renewable energy, and initiatives in the Southeast Asian region such as China’s “One Belt, One Road” policy.

Both groups expressed interest in working together, particularly in enhancing the role and expanding the contributions of policy think tanks at the national and international levels.
