In line with Zero Waste Month, our buzzword for this week is “solid waste”.

It refers to unwanted and discarded materials from household, commercial, and agricultural activities.

Solid wastes may include food waste, scrap, nonhazardous industrial waste, and street sweepings. (Source: Republic Act 9003)

A PIDS study found that the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 does not have guidelines on how to handle the surge of healthcare wastes (e.g., face masks, face shields, personal protective equipment) during a health crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic.
