Studies on food consumption by socioeconomic groups and by rural-urban areas have been relatively few. Even scarcer are studies on household fuel consumption. This paper reviews existing data on Philippine urbanization and household patterns of food and fuel consumption, with the view of identifying issues for research. A preliminary simulation model, designed to capture the implications of various policies on household consumption, is taken as the benchmark for deriving more precise estimates of income, expenditure and price elasticities that will serve as inputs for an economic-demographic simulation model.
