The feature article in this issue of the DRN is based on the highlights of a recently completed study done by premier economist Dr. Gerardo Sicat which analyzes the responses of surveyed companies in the country on prevailing policies affecting the labor market such as minimum wage setting, hiring and firing, training, and holidays, among others. The study highlights the fact that while these policies are widely accepted by the companies to protect the welfare of employees, it needs to be emphasized that employment creation is still one of the most pressing challenges of the Philippine economy. As such, there is a need to have some of the country’s labor policies reevaluated.
