The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will hold a public webinar on March 14, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM via Zoom, in line with the National Women’s Month celebration. The webinar will feature two PIDS studies exploring the economic opportunities and challenges faced by women.
The first study, “Assessing the Adoption of Circular Economy among Women-Led MSMEs in Metro Manila: A Pilot Study”, authored by Foreign Service Institute of the Philippines – Center for International Relations and Strategic Studies former Chief Research Officer Jovito Jose P. Katigbak and Senior Foreign Affairs Research Specialist Jemimah Joanne C. Villaruel, examines the potential of circular economy (CE) principles for empowering women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (WMSMEs) in Metro Manila while contributing to sustainable development. It reveals that most WMSMEs that practice traditional methods of resource utilization and waste management have low awareness of CE principles and face a lack of demand for circular goods or services. The authors suggest implementing a multi-level approach with advocacy, training, incentives, and national frameworks to support WMSMEs in adopting CE principles.
The second study, “Gendering the Informal Tourism Sector toward Inclusive and Sustainable Growth: The Case Study of Boracay Island”, by PIDS Philippine APEC Study Center Network Project Development Officer Jean Clarisse T. Carlos, Central Luzon State University – College of Home Science and Industry former Assistant Professor Marie Jel D. Bautista, and Asian Institute of Management – Dr. Andrew L. Tan Center for Tourism Research Manager Eylla Laire M. Gutierrez, explores the gender inclusivity of Boracay's tourism development. The informal tourism sector in Boracay is largely driven by women. The study investigates their roles, challenges, and preferences within the sector. It revealed that despite opportunities for formalization, many women choose the informal economy due to educational limitations and a preference for flexible work arrangements. The study highlights the need for policies that support and empower women, considering their challenges and choices.
