Hello, PIDS friends! Here's our #FactFriday for the week on solid waste management in the Philippines.

A PIDS study underscored the country’s persistent challenges with solid waste management despite the presence of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. Evidence on the ground points to weak policy implementation, with illegal dumpsites remaining despite the supposed forced transition to engineered sanitary landfills. This can be attributed to the lack of available investment and financial resources among local government units and the low priority given to solid waste management in their administrative plans. Waste generation reduction and material recovery measures were also found weak, if not lacking, across study sites.
