Macau (MNA) – Budget airline Air Asia announced on Thursday that it would reopen its Kalibo (Boracay) route on March 2, making it the third destination between Macau and the Philippines.

The flights will take place every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, departing at 10:55 am from Boracay and arriving at 1:30 pm in Macau, and then departing at 2:00 pm from Macau and arriving at Boracay at 4:35 pm.

>The Philippines island resort was closed to tourists by President Rodrigo Duterte for six months last year, from April to October, after he described it as a ‘cesspool’.

The Philippine Institute for Development Studies did a study on the impacts of the closure, and estimates that the overall economic loss was between PHP20.8 billion (US$398 million/ HKD3.1 billion) and PHP83.15 billion, while in terms of income, the loss in compensation would range from PHP7 billion to PHP27.9 billion.

In addition to Air Asia reopening the Boracay route, Philippine Airlines reportedly launched a new flight from Kunming, China to Kalibo (Boracay) International Airport earlier this week as well.
