The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will hold a Pulong Saliksikan on “SME Internationalization and Finance in Asia”, on July 16, 2015, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at the Romulo Hall of NEDA sa Makati Bldg., 106 Amorsolo St., Legaspi Village, Makati City.

The presenter is Dr. Ganeshan Wignaraja, Advisor in the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department. From 2012 to April 2015, he was Director of Research of the ADB Institute in Tokyo and has worked for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Oxford University, Commonwealth Secretariat, and a private consulting firm. He has published 15 books on international economics, regional integration, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He has a PhD in Economics from Oxford University.

Concerns about rising inequality in Asia has put the spotlight on global value chains (GVCs) and the role of SMES. This topic is important in policy discussions in the Philippines as APEC 2015 host economy. However, there is a dearth of empirical analysis on this topic. During the Pulong, Dr. Wignaraja will explore a number of important issues in relation to SMES in GVCs in the region, such as: (i) what role do SMES play in GVCs?, (2) what are the characteristics of SMES that participate in GVCs?, and (3) what measures including finance and related policies support greater SME participation in GVCs.

This Pulong Saliksikan will also be available via live streaming on the PIDS website (www.pids.gov.ph).
