For this week, our buzzword is “nuclear energy”.

It is a type of energy generated by splitting atoms of certain elements through “nuclear fission”. The splitting of atoms releases highly concentrated energy that can produce large amounts of electricity.

A PIDS study noted that while nuclear power is a promising energy source, it entails risks. To safely generate nuclear energy in the Philippines, it is important to have a 100-year plan that includes a thorough evaluation of the plant's disaster risk and clear protocols from construction to decommissioning and waste disposal or storage. The same study recommends following the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Milestones Approach as a guide.
