If the advancements of the Internet and the disruption of the pandemic have taught us anything, it’s that life and work are ever-evolving.

Several online opportunities are out there, and it’s the Philippine government’s job to ensure Filipinos are taking full advantage of these opportunities, according to a recent study.

Published by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, the study entitled “Online Work in the Philippines: Some Lessons in the Asian Context” (by Dacuycuy et al.) delves into the trends in online work in the country while taking Asian influences and factors into account. Among the focus of the study include the platform economy and the necessary social protection, the delivery of services through digital means, and work practices.

The study is an interesting read, and I recommend you take the time to ponder on its findings. To summarize, the study recognizes the need for the government to introduce training systems so Filipinos can acquire skills.

It emphasizes that there should be social protections to address gender inequality, unemployment, and the rise of the gig economy. The study also finds the need to support the demand for creative process outsourcing and the use of the platform economy for inter-Asian cooperation.
